Brand mark
Brand marks are visual (or auditory) cues used to identify Wikimedia or any of its projects as the source of the knowledge being shared. This signal is devised to fully adapt to diverse contexts, mediums and constraints. For this reason, brand marks can take a variety of shapes, such as word marks or icons, and even be represented by audio (see Wikimedia sound logo).
Brand marks are especially relevant in constrained environments, where they enable source recognition with minimal use of space. Displaying brand marks supports clarity and allows distinguishing Wikimedia sources in external branded contexts.

Visual brand marks
The Wikimedia Foundation's visual identity guidelines make available official Wikipedia brand marks.

Coming soon: A new category will group official brand marks of other Wikimedia projects, such as Wikidata or Wiktionary.Wikimedia Attribution API
Beta: The Wikimedia Attribution API returns the default icons and logos of the source Wikimedia project in adefault_brand_marksobject. A broader set of official brand assets are available through Wikimedia brand resources.Reference documentation can be found in any wiki's REST API sandbox, such as the REST API sandbox on English Wikipedia →
MediaWiki Action API: Brand mark information can be retrieved through this API using
action=query&meta=siteinfo&siprop=general. The response includes a logo value with the URL of the main brand mark associated with the source Wikimedia project. Please note thathttps:needs to be prepended to the value in order to render or download the asset. This method supports basic brand mark display, but it should not be considered a complete brand asset API. For approved, high-resolution, and context-specific Wikipedia brand assets, visit the official guidelines. See the MediaWiki Action API documentation →
Audio brand marks
- Different lengths and audio file formats of the Wikimedia sound logo can be found on the Wikimedia brand portal. Use the same sound logo for attribution of any Wikimedia project on all audio mediums.
Implementation guidance
Minimum requirements
Use brand marks to enable quick visual or auditory recognition of the Wikimedia project being used as a source, especially if the source is not mentioned or included in text form due to space constraints.
Always assign
alttext to brand marks when they are used to represent the source on their own (i.e., if the source isn’t included in text form due to constraints).Make sure that the brand mark you use is an official, unaltered version. In the case of Wikipedia, verify that it is in accordance with the visual identity guidelines. Keep marks clear, at recommended sizes, and with sufficient contrast. Do not alter colors or proportions, or add effects to brand marks.
For audio-only contexts, such as voice assistants or spoken-word media, you must use the Wikimedia sound logo to signal that information originates from a Wikimedia project.
Best practices
Where space allows, prioritize displaying the full wordmark of a project, instead of only its logo, to maximize recognition.
Use compact logos (such as Wikipedia’s “W” icon) when space is constrained, in interfaces like cards, chips, or mobile layouts.
When using the sound logo, apply the full four-second version for long-form audio (e.g., like podcasts), or the short one-second version in short-form audio (e.g., voice assistants). Avoid playing the logo over other audio; include short pauses before and after so the logo can stand out clearly.
